Inside the Chapter

Sierra Club is a nonprofit membership organization, with leaders elected by our membership on an annual basis. We have 22,000 members in Massachusetts, and more than 700,000 members nationwide, dedicated to the protection of the Earth's natural environment. The Massachusetts Chapter currently has 5 active groups serving much of the commonwealth, with volunteer leaders who are active on local environmental issues. If you would like to get involved please contact us.

Groups and Town Committees

Some regions of the chapter are organized into groups, meeting to address local issues. These groups are always open to new members, and welcome your involvement. If you live in Western or Central Massachusetts, or outside the boundaries of any of the listed groups, and wish to start a local Sierra Club group, please contact us.

Active Issue Committees

All members are encouraged and welcome to attend committee meetings to learn more about our efforts. You can become involved in the issues you care about by joining the club and volunteering for any of the issues the Club is active on.

Political Committee
Participate in the Sierra Club's ongoing political endorsement process, research candidates' records, work on campaigns. Help elect environmental candidates in your community! The Chapter Political Committee has three openings - and they welcome members in all parts of the state. The committee meets by conference call as well as live. Energy Committee
Addresses environmental, economic, and educational issues relating to energy and its production and consumption. Assists at the local, state, national and international levels. General issues include GWSA implementation, energy reduction, coal plants, wind and alternative energy, and Global Warming. Click here for the calendar to see when this committee meets. The Energy Committee offers monthly email updates on their activities.

Transportation Committee
Focuses on all aspects of transportation, from rail, bus, MBTA and other regional transit authorities, airports, and issues of sprawl. Click here for the calendar to see when this committee meets.  The Transportation Committee maintains a blog on their activities.

Legislative Action Committee
One of the most powerful tools that the chapter has in affecting environmental protections. We sponsor and support many environmental bills, and this committee covers all the aspects of legislation: testifying at hearings, lobbying and making calls to legislators, and contacting the press about important legislative issues. Help Draft Testimony - The chapter supports many bills and we need help drafting testimony. These reports are typically 2-3 pages and usually include a chart or graph - and are footnoted. If you enjoy the aspects of research and writing reports, this is a great opportunity! Click here for the calendar to see when this committee meets.

Inner City Outings
Works to bring urban youth to enjoy our forests and natural treasures. Click here for more.
